After the controversy, Bangalore Metro announced a 30% cut in fares

In response to strong feedback from the public, the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has decided to revise the recently increased metro fares, with a reduction of up to 30 per cent to be implemented immediately. BMRCL Managing Director Maheshwar Rao announced that the board reviewed the public feedback and decided to adjust the fare hike at specific points where the increase was considered excessive.

Addressing a press conference, Rao said, "We feel that the revised fare structure will result in a reduction of up to 30%. It will be effective from today (February 13)." He further said that public feedback played a key role in the decision and the board held detailed discussions to address concerns over the abnormal fare hike. "Both the board and we had meetings and based on the suggestions received, certain improvements have been made to reduce the excessive price hike at certain points," he said.

He said the revision is aimed at providing relief to a large section of metro users, with an estimated 30-45% of commuters benefiting from the adjusted fares. Earlier, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Thursday said he had directed the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) to correct the uneven hike in metro fares.

The chief minister's intervention came after passengers started complaining about the recent hike in metro fares. "The manner in which the Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has implemented the Bengaluru Metro fare revision has led to anomalies and fares have more than doubled in some sections," Siddaramaiah said in a post on social media platform 'X'.
